Just had identical problem on 1996 RR 4.6. I had lifters and cam shaft changed at same time - in addition to other parts you mention, and of course heads machined. Unforuntately, overheating and white smoke is still a problem so it looks like I may have a cracked block aswell. Looks like a new short engine for me....
