Top end advice/Head gasket/Coolant loss

Posted by heed on December 19, 2002 at 08:42:54:

Hi folks,

I need to replace the head gaskets on my 93 RRC V8 EFi and am looking for suggestions as to what else to look at closely or replace as a matter of course whilst the heads are off. The truck has 121,000 miles on it, runs fine, and a recent (prior to gasket problems) compression test had all cylinders within 10% of 180psi.

I bought the truck at 108,000 and do not know what work has previously been done. At the moment I am only considering replacing timing gear (chain, sprockets), valve springs, valve seals and of course gaskets. I am planning to keep the truck for at least the next three years. What else would you suggest?

Incidentally I am replacing the head gaskets as a result of the following symptoms:
At first:
- A slight misfire became apparent
- One plug appeared wet (not with oil)
- Minor coolant loss with no visible leaks
Then:
- After driving a few miles temp gauge would peg to the right then fall back to centre before having time to stop (at about the time I'd expect the thrermostat to be opening
Then worse:
- After driving a few miles gauge stayed to the right a bit longer and coolant overflowed from expansion tank cap
Then this morning:
- White smoke from exhaust accompanied by the above and more than minor coolant loss.

Just in case you're experincing any of the same..........hope not.
