If it has points, use a test light between coil negative and ground - ign. ON. Let me know and I will detail a method. As to finding TDC compression for No. 1. Remove the spark plugs, jam a wad of wet paper into No. 1 spark plug hole and turn the engine by hand. When the wad blows out, you are on the compression stroke. Keep turning, slowly, until the 6o timing mark aligns. As to the rotor position - is there a line indented on the distributor body where the cap locates?? if so, align the center of the rotor with than mark. If not, you should know which tower on the distributor cap has the No. 1 HT lead attached. Mark the distributor body and align the rotor with that. On both methods, remember there will be about a 10o rotation as the distributor is installed due to the helix angle of the drive gears, so place the rotor about 10o advanced of the mark before you install it. It will rotate as you push it home. Lastly, but not leastly, if this is all done correctly, the distributor adjustment should be very close to central position and if it has vacuum advance, then it should be positioned for easy attachment of the vaccum pipe.
