Static timing help

Posted by Nick on December 11, 2002 at 17:54:20:

Howdy,

I am installing my rebuilt dizzy and have read about setting the static timing. But I need some help in understanding the process.

I have to 'turn' the enging so that the timing marks point to 6 degrees BTDC. Then I install the distributor. Then I make sure the rotor is aligned with #1 cylinder in dizzy cap. Then I use a volt meter and rotate the dizzy until it's in the correct open/close position for the reluctor.

Questions: Do I have the process right? what size bolt is on the harmoinic dampener?
How do I make sure that the #1 cylinder is on the compression stroke? (By turning to 6 BTDC?) And then I place the distributor into the engine, but how to tell if the rotor is in the right position?

Thanks for any and all help in clearing this up.

NGH
