Well, what do you know - it was not a blocked restrictor - it was completely worn cylinder bores with ring gaps of about 2 mm and a glaze so bright it was like a mirror.

So how come a t 160 000km?

1 Maybe the previous owner did a little experimenting with the mileage on the clock. It was bought from a main dealer at age 8 months.

2 I recently did a lot of mileage in darkest Africa and had to use paraffin of dubious quality to get me back about 2000 km. That was a year ago and could have contributed to the rapid wear.

3 The glazing is due to a lot of short distance driving (about 6 km) to and from work.

The car pulled well when up on the turbo, but getting there was the problem. Shows what a turbo can do for a tired engine.

An in situ rebore and 20 thou oversize pistons will have it sorted out soon
