V8 Carbs and hedgerow wrecks

A friend has been given a Series II that has been parked in the hedge for three years at least. Will need lots of help from you to get it up and about.
It's got a V8 in it, amazingly we have fuel (originally dirty but pumped clean) up to the carb and we have fire when turning over.
We can get it running by spraying petrol into the air intake but no fuel is getting into the engine by the normal manner. Is there a trick to V8 carb.s or do we just take the thing apart, clean it an pray, what, if anything will need replacing?
