Defender core plug (welsh plug) replacement

Posted by marc on October 06, 1998 at 04:07:51:

I own a 200Tdi Land Rover (which works hard all over Southern Africa), and have just discovered that there is a coroded core plug (welsh plug) at the back of the engine block.

I'd like to replace all core plugs, but access to the rear plugs is very limited. My local Land Rover agent says that the only way to change the rear plugs is to remove the entire engine. Not only is this expensive, but it also seems like poor design.

I was looking for information yesterday and came across an article in which was mentioned the fact that several older British engines were designed with access to awkward core plugs through a threaded hole in a plate. The core old plug would be removed, and the new one "pushed" into place by a bolt passing through the threaded plate.

Do you have any information about this method, or must I bite the bullet and remove the engine?

Any info. will be very much appreciated.

Regards, Marc - Johannesburg, South Africa
