I have a 95 D-90 with a Warn 9000 both of whick I bought new in 95.. I use it extensively off roading, usually running trails rated 8-10. I have never once had any difficulty with the Warn. I wheel in mud, water, snow and extreme trail conditions and have never had a failure with my Warn. I live in Washington state where we get plenty of rain and snow and neither has affected its performance.
I would caution you on a winch that needs your engine running in order to use it. I have seen too many times engines that won't start due to water or mud and if it had a Milemarke it would still be stuck. I can't speak on the reliability or use of any other brand of winch. I seems to me that the west coast loves Warn and the east coast prefers Superwinch. I have looked at market trends and that seems to be the two favored winches. I hope that whatever winch you choose will be the winch for you and it will give you the security for off-roading alone. I do alot of my offroading alone and on occasion with a group of fellow 4X4's and do at times use my winch on myself or others. Be sure that you read and understand your winch and its capabilities and follow all safety recommendations to the letter. Good luck!
