Hub noise, any ideas?

Hi All,
I thought my pads on my '93 200 tdi Discovery were gone, as I had a noise coming from the front o/s. Turns out the pads are fine.
There is a squealing noise when braking, or the slightest pedal pressure. I jacked up the front o/s. There is certainly play when rocking the wheel using the top and bottom of the wheel (i forgot to check side to side), very much like a hweel bearing. Could it be a wheel bearing failure? Or, is this a classic symptom of something else (more expensive?)? There is a strange sucking type noise if you rotate the wheel in a forward direction (only)? I checked the level of oil in the hub, but it was fine.
Any thoughts/ideas would gratefully recieved.
