Just got a call from the repair shop. The starter is fried and a new one is $450. Can't diagnose the other problem without a starter. I can't even imagine a scenario where the problem with shutting down at idle speed would translate into something that would fry a starter. I keep you posted, but somebody weigh in if you have any theories.
