Distributor Distress

Posted by Michael R on September 25, 1998 at 06:19:26:

Recently bought my second '88 Range Rover. Did ignition tune-up, replacing plugs. In trying to remove rotor, the distributor shaft raised up and would not go back down, therefore cap would not seat. Removed distributor, sawed off the old rusted on rotor, and tapped the shaft back down in place. Replaced everything, engine started OK. In setting timing, I had to advance the distributor to maximum to get the timing light to even show 18 degress BTDC. Specs are 6 degrees BTDC. Did I foul up the alignment of the dist shaft? If so, how do I recover?
