The Ford conversion seems to be alot less popular than the 350 Chevy. If you are in the U.S., Chevy adapters are available for the Series Gearbox, i.e. Scotty's and maybe Advanced Adapters. But, the Series box with a V-8 is a short-lived proposition. So a Ford with a good 5-speed (U.S. made) mated to the Series T-case would work.
However, the transfer case, is fairly bullet proof.
If you're set on using a Ford, Terriann has a good website describing her efforts. Timm Cooper, a very talented gentleman, had a major hand in the adapter fab, motor mounts, bulkhead modifications, tranny tunnel fab, radiator relocation, etc, etc.
Cooper does mostly 350 conversions and suspension mods for Series that are the equal or better than any but the most radical Jeep mod. He's in Oregon.
A gentleman in Virginia, makes a 3.0L modified GM 4cyl.
Good gas milage, all the power you'll ever need for an "88, and a much quicker and easier swap.
But if you gotta' have a V-8, well, you gotta have a V-8.
Good Luck
