I have tried to fit the correct unit, but it doesn't. Looking at the teeth on the new unit compared to the old one, they are totally different pitch. This leads me to think that the flywheel ring gear is different. What do you think the chances are that someone has fitted different ring gear whilst every other part (from the outside anyway) looks like petrol fitment? Does the diesel transmission look the same from the outside? It follows that it is a diesel starter as they don't need to turn as fast as the petrol starter, but it doesn't explain a) why I have one fitted, and b) how I can get a petrol one back on. I tried for hours last night to wiggle it in, and then found out about the teeth. Thought gratefully received as always. Regards,
