Sarter Motor Problem - Help!

Posted by Jason (UK) on September 10, 1998 at 14:24:00:

I have a 109" series 3 2.25 Petrol. The starter motor has not worked properly since I have owned the vehicle and I have been told it is the wrong one by someone who I consider a reliable source. I had a starter with the solenoid attached to it (pre-engaged?) and it has always turned slowly. The Haynes manual states that there are two types of series 3 starter pre 1979 and post 1979 both of which are Inertia (no solenoid.) I have a solenoid which has been bypassed which sort of confirms that fact that I have the wrong starter fitted. I have, however obtained a second hand Lucas starter for the post 1979 2.25 series 3 engine but it doesn't fit. The teeth on the starter are the wrong pitch which stops it seating properly, although it all seems very close. A fellow Landy owner and neighbour has suggested I may have a diesel transmission fitted which would account for the pre-engaged type starter. Thing is, my vehicle is ex military and a diesel starter would have always turned slowly. I can't see why they would have fitted something that may not be 100% reliable. As far as I can tell the engine is as it should be. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Regards,
Jason
