" Check engine" caution light

I have a '93 LWB that I just purchased..(300 miles ago)
71000 miles... at the end of it's maiden voyage of 300 miles the Check engine warning light came on...
what are the most likely causes and things I could check
to determine why this light has suddenly appeared...?
