I don't have any experience with RHD Range Rovers, but it all certainly sounds like an intermittent valve sticking in the valve block (or an intermittent leak in an air spring or pipe).
If this is correct (and it's only an Internet guess), then the system is correctly reading the height sensors and trying to control the air suspension, but the air leak is overcoming the amount of air that the compressor can supply. This can cause further damage in that it can over- heat the compressor, causing failure of the compressor or other problems (blown fuse, etc.).
Sorry, it sounds as if you're in for a thorough leak test procedure.
