TD5 failed MOT emmisions

Posted by PETER on December 22, 2001 at 08:14:34:

I am very concerned, I have a Land Rover Discovery TD5 that is now almost three years old and has covered only 20,000 miles and therefore I needed to acquire an MOT.
I took the vehicle to my local main Land Rover dealership, who are offering free MOTs, only to be told that it failed its emissions test. The dealership was not specific about which part of the test it failed but I think it was the smoke test!
The dealership informed me that the only way of getting it to pass the emissions test would be to add a fuel additive to the diesel then re-tests. This was done and surprise surprise it passed the emissions test with flying colours.
Having in mind Land Rovers claims, in their advertising, of how clean the emissions are from the TD5
I contacted Land Rover customer care, they were as usual or no help and could not offer any reason for this failure.
I wonder if any one else has experienced this problem and or method of rectification or indeed advice as to why it should failed its MOT emissions test. The warranty on this vehicle expires in about two weeks, is it faulty, what should I do about the problem? Is there a problem or is it just the way I drive it (carfully).
