The taillamps and dashlights are on the same circuit. That's so, if your dashlights go out, it's a sign to check your taillamps. Having "both" out is a classic sign of a bad fuse, but it could be a loose connector, broken wire downstream of the fuse, etc.
Have you checked fuses (both circuit fuses and main fuses)with a multimeter or test light? You should have juice to the input side of the applicable fuses and the output side of those same fuses.
