It is a well known 'design problem' with the LT77 re shifting from 1st to 2nd gear, I had a similar problem on my '91 Discovery, but not as severe as yours.
Are you using automatic transmission fluid in your gearbox?, it is a 'kind of solution' to that shifting problem, as recommended by L/R.
What I did with my LT77 was I used a 'home made' combo oil. 70% auto transmission fluid and 30% normal manual transmission oil. It worked for mine, shifting was better and smoother. Now some people may say "eeeeeeek"...well...like I said, it worked on mine OK.
Having said that though, because of main shaft spline gear wear on my LT77, plus other non oil related wear problems, early this year I installed a near new R380 gearbox in my Discovery.
