Michael - Jason and myself have been discussing the article in LRO (September issue 10) about the LPG saga. In the UK LPG is priced at 36 pence per litre (unleaded 68 pence per litre). As the article states there are not many outlets in the UK, however, Shell have committed to installing lots more in their service stations over the next few years. Also the UK government are increasing petrol costs by 6% above inflation (about 9% total) annually but with a fixed 3 year duty on LPG. If LPG takes off how much duty are they going to slap on us after the 3 year period!!??!! One good point is that LPG, unlike petrol, doesn't wash the oil away from the cylinder walls, however, in another part of the LRO article they are stating that you start the engine on petrol and when it's warm enough the ECU will switch to LPG. But surely most damage is done to a cold engine in the first few minutes of running before it reaches running temperature? One other possibility is to have your own LPG tank in the back garden. Where I live in the sticks we don't have piped town gas and most folks have an LPG tank for their central heating systems at a lower tax rate - yes and you've guessed correct the duty on road vehicle LPG is higher. AAArgh! 2 LPG tanks in by back yard!! How do the authorities know which gas I put in my Truck? Our "red" diesels for farmers (low tax duty) will be found by Customs and Excise as the wrong colour fuel in the fuel tank BIG trouble!
So the saga continues........
