Defender 110 hub seals

Posted by tim on August 30, 1998 at 03:44:52:

My '95 build Defender 110 wagon - have decided that inspection and greasing of hub bearings is due but have not previously done this job and have thus not myself looked at hub assembly. When trying to buy seals have recieved conflicting information. One spares supplier says that there is one seal on each hub, don't have part numbers. Other supplier says that are definitely two seals on each hub - part numbers FRC8222 and FTC4785. Vehicle has disc brakes all round. Does anyone know what the story really is?

I cannot find any reference in Land Rover literature to routine hub bearing maintenance (intervals and so forth) - previous Land Cruiser needed greasing every 20,000 km or so. I guess it does depend on how much wading, etc is done but would be interested in any comments on the subject - also on whether seals can be reused if they look OK.
