The series heaters are known for their lack of heat - Defenders are almost as bad but do have a better fan.
There is an artic heater for Defenders and probably Series vehicles, your best start might be Paddocks or Craddocks, if you get get some heat into the beast then it will be a pleasure to drive! Performance in snow and ice I have no experience with series but the SWB Defender at 93inch gives no problems in easy English winters. All LR vehicles are heavier than cars - once you have 1.8 tons plus of vehicle moving the stopping is not so easy on icy roads!
