1995 Discovery Check Engine Light Problem Posted by Gary Schenk on August 28, 1998 at 09:23:43: I own a 1995 Discovery and after reading a Atlantic British catalog, and at the advice of my mechanic bought a Jacobs "Professional Type High Powered" ignition coil setup as advertised in the Atlantic British catalog. My mechanic installed it, along with a "secondary trigger" required to be used in conjunction with the Jacobs system, using the OEM coil as the signal, while getting increased spark at the same time via the new system. The "original" signal generated by the OEM coil is apparently important due to the greatly increased spark generated by the Jacobs system, which according to Jacobs would trigger false "check engine readouts" on the computer diagnostic system without this secondary trigger installed as part of the whole system. I have experienced improved performance as advertised by Jacobs in the Atlantic British catalog, in the form of more low end torque and increased gas milage: now @ 17mpg city and about 21mpg highway, which I am very happy about. However, when the system was initially installed, Jacobs sent only the primary system itself and forgot to mention that the secondary trigger was needed for the '95 Discovery, and of course did not send it with the primary system. Before the secondary trigger was installed, the vehicle would stall out about at least 30% of the time, especially with a full engine load (A/C on,etc). The check engine light would come on, and the computer listed the problem as a "code 48". My mechanic completely disconnected the Jacobs system to go back to the original OEM setup to see what would happen, and the check engine light never came on, and no error codes appeared on the computer. The vehicle ran fine , although the increased gas milage also went back to normal (14-17mpg). After a call to Jacobs by my mechanic, Jacobs admitted they made a mistake and that the secondary trigger was necessary to be installed in conjunction with the system I purchased subsequently installed on my '95 Discovery, and that the increased spark generated by the system affected the vehicle's sensitive electronic computer controls, thereby triggering a false computer reading. Jacobs apologized for the oversight and sent the secondary coil setup which my mechanic installed yesterday. The vehicle hasn't been stalling as before the secondary trigger was installed, and seems to be running just fine, but this "check engine" light came on again when I started the vehicle after driving it around all day (on the street), and code 48 is showing up on the computer readout once again. I could simply have this whole Jacobs system removed and returned and go back to the standard OEM setup, but I do like the benefits of increased milage, etc. Is this Jacobs system incompatible with the "95 Discovery despite Jacobs' claims to the contrary? I understand that code 48 is some type of fuel flow control valve(?) and at this point I am totally frustrated since the code or engine light did not appear before I had the jacobs system installed in the first place, or when the system was disconnected. Is there any hope? Help! Any advice would and be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
