1994 NAS Defender 90 will not start

Posted by James Dearden on September 15, 2001 at 12:43:43:

Suddenly won't start .. seems to fire first try (one engine rotation) and then dies .. and then NOTHING)

I have had for a year .. have a 92 Range Rover .. so I am still mobile .. however I am very green to anything with EFI and ECU !!!

HELP!!!

1. I have good spark all the way to plugs .. so it's not ignition

2. So, I suspect either fuel or EFI/ECU ??? I have checked every fuse and connection I can find!

HELP !!!

I have Haynes Def manual from UK .. but it is only good for suspension and body stuff as it covers the Diesel engine. What is a good maual to get for general electrical wiring info and engine repair etc. ??? Where can I buy?

Also .. any ideas on what order I should attack problem?

I have read forum articles on ECU .. EFI valves but I don't know where to start.

Is there an electrical gismo that I can attach to the ECU and read any error codes? Where do I get a list of codes?
Where is the bloody ECU !!!

Is there a simple fuel pipe I can disconect and see if the fuel pump is working? I can see several pipes coming onto the fuel system but I am loathe to start trying them one by one!

OK .. loads of questions .. any answers?

P.S. My Def. has had a weird problem for a while .. nearly every time you start it, it starts, then the revs kind of splutter and then die. Doesn't seem to be related to a cold or a hot engine. All I have had to do is stop and re-start the engine. Seems like the ECU or EFI just get their knickers in a twist the first start! Could this be related?

Cheers
