When I think about the stretching timing chain business, it only makes sense because almost all modern engines have gone to a belt and these belts of course are now designed to be service items (i.e. replaced every 100,000 km or so). I think the belt is probably quieter than the chain setup, but more importantly with stricter smog laws worldwide the manufacturers realise that as service items the owner shall have to change them periodically and thus (theorectically) keeping the motor in tune and therefore cleaner burning. This also helps us diesel owners too because we're always being rubbished by the general public for driving these "noisy, smelly, and smoky motors". Regards, Ace.
