I've never heard of the switch giving problems. I have a '91 model and it always has worked. In any case, accessing the switch is around a 10 minute job. Simply remove the center console and the switch is right there. If charged more than 1 hour labour, find another mechanic. The switch costs around $45AUD (15UKP) according to my handy catalog.
