You mention a 2.8l diesel - I presume this means some aftermarket diesel.

The V8 is probably going to cause diff. problems unless you have a very light foot (you say you want to put it in a series 3). It is a nice motor but you need to be the ownder of an oil-well to run it off-road.

I would go for an aftermarket diesel like a Nissan LD28 or ED33. I am not sure where you are and what motors are available where you are but in NZ the LD28 is used a lot, as is the ED33. Some have installed the TD27 as well. These motors have proven to be more reliable than the Landrover diesel in NZ. These motors are easy to get adaptor kits for although when using these diesels most people have to install an overdrive or put higher-ratio diff. heads in to avoid over-revving.

With the diesel you won't have to worry about getting the ignition wet although you will have to change the exhaust pipe and muffler as well as use the diesel's aircleaner for best results - diesels like to breathe.

Another advantage of a diesel is that they are much more controllable in relation to your foot on the accelerator and have a wider and smoother torque-curve. A favourite trick of mine is to use the hand-throttle that you can install with the diesel and let the Landie do the driving - something difficult to do with a petrol without some form of mechanical governor operating the throttle.

Hope this helps
