He kept the original 2.25 petrol unit because it is so strong (he had a S2A LWB which did 330,000 miles on the original pistons before he rebored it. The bores were 0.018" out-of-round) but got a bit upset when the price of gas went sky-high. He lives in NZ (no sheep jokes please) so gas is expensive. What he did was shave about 0.100" off the head on the advice of other LR fans. The motor can handle it no problems and it brought the compression up from 8:1 to about 10:1. What a difference. He used to get 27mpg out of the motor with a huge leap in performance. He was using Radials but it made a big difference over the original 18-20mpg. He used to cruise at 100km/h and when in a hurray kept it singing at 120km/h and the motor never missed a beat. His original old S2A went all around Aussie and then was shipped to NZ where it went all around NZ cruising around 90-100km/h. I will probably be buying another Landie and I will be using the 2.25 petrol motor and shaving the head just like Dad. I just couldn't believe the difference over the original motor. You can do other stuff like installing extractors which apparently make a big difference too. Just an idea that you might prefer.... |
