Funniest thing happened. When I was changing the oil (a task I set out on before discovering the sputtering problem) -- basically waiting for the oil to heat up -- I revved it above 2000 rpms, suffering the same problems as they would dip to 2000, then recover, then dip again. After about a minute of this it seemed to "pass" whatever it was. The engine began to run strong again, the batt light (which was then only partly glowing) went off, and nothing seems to remain of my original problem. Needless to say, it does nothing for my confidence in going off roading . . .

I am thinking about changing the distr cap, plug wires and coil as a precaution . . . or am I just wasting time? Anyone out there have a clue what this could have been (i.e. -- blocked fuel injector or something)?
