G'day

I had a Range Rover which did 350,000 km (divide by 1.6 for miles) and was still going well, my 300tdi Defender had done 87,000 km when I sold it and was going perfectly and using no oil, my 200tdi Discovery has 110,000km and is going perfectly. Has always (since 41,000km) used about 1 litre / 5000km. I have seen a 200tdi Discovery with 200,000km which was still going perfectly.

It all depends on use and maintence. If you drive relatively long trips you will get a longer life out of your engine. If you just go shopping and the engine never warms up, it will not last very long. The engine will also last longer if it works relatively hard. Diesel engines hate to loaf - they glaze their bores and start using oil. Towing and moderate to heavy loads are perfect to keep the engine happy.

Change the oil and filter at least every 5000 km, more often in dusty and harsh conditions and at least every 3 months despite distance travelled. Change the timing belt every 100,000 km or more often. Mine was still fine at 100,000km.

Change the coolant regulatly. Alloy heads on iron blocks need good coolant otherwise the radiator will start to block up. Excess heat destroys engines.

Change the air cleaner element as recommended or more often in dusty conditions.

Hope this helps a little.

Michael
