In england there are more Tdi Disco's than V8's. I have a' 92, 200 Tdi with 52k and full dealer service history. The car is faultless, starts instantly in all weathers and uses no oil between services I also know many owners with 100-150kand no engine problems. There is always the odd horror story surrounding any Land Rovers, but with proper maintenance (I would not buy one without documented s/history) they are excellent engines. I recently spoke to a man with a Disco Tdi van with 175k and no problems (engine wise) and it spends most of its life towing heavy plant (machinery), as he said to me "change the oil regulary and they'll go forever". The nearest I have heard to a problem is the odd premature timing belt failiure. I am not sure what L/Rovers recommended time to change is , but I changed mine at 50k, based on the old adage that prevention is better than cure. I did a fair amount of asking around before I bought mine and I found nothing to put me off the Tdi and nothing has changed my opinion since. Hope the above is of some help.
