I have over 200,000 miles on my Mercedes diesel and never any problems (at 180,000 miles, the compression on my engine was checked and it met/exceeded new engine specifications). I rely heavily upon the advice provided by Mercedes Benz through their STAR magazine. They do not recomend any oil additives. They've tested them all. Best to use the highest grade oil possible. They also tested synthetic oil (i.e., Mobil 1) and did not think they were sufficiently better than top grade conventional oils and they also found evidence that synthetic oils may be more prone to oil leaks (over time, gaskets may not seal synthetic oils as well as conventional oil-- I'll admit that there are many who would debate this, and the synthetic oil manufacturers do have some very impressive data on their products). I do remember one letter to the editor of STAR, where a MBZ diesel owner described how he changed his oil every 2500 miles and with every oil change used a quart of Murrey's Miracle Oil, and his engine had to be replaced at 120,000 miles (MBZ diesel engines should last between 300,000-600,000 miles)-- he was severly criticized for using the oil additive . Conventional oils are very high tech and the chemistry is very balanced-- oil additives risk throwing the chemistry off balance and the results can be very bad. Just my humble opinion.

My wife just bought a '98 Discovery (I couldn't convince her to buy the M320, I think because she liked the L-R dealer better)-- so far, really enjoying the Disco, and the L-R dealer is vastly superior to any Mercedes dealer I have worked with-- if only they could upgrade the quality of the steering and the transmission shifts; otherwise, a great vehicle (a little better gas mileage wouldn't hurt either). Regards,
