Jack up a rear wheel and rotate back and forth. Watch the propshaft to tell how much is in the diff/spline/etc and how much is in the gearbox. It is typical to wear the outer splines on the halfshafts as they are not lubed. This be fixed, if desired. To check the gear box output splines, remove the PTO cover, a rock a wheel or the whole car with it in gear to see the relative movement between the gearbox mainshaft and the transfer input gear. It is pretty rare on post '94 cases.
