Posted by John (MA) on May 03, 2001 at 10:59:42: Hi all...I new to the forum and have a few questions some of you might be able to answer with regard to a stero upgrade I'm getting ready to attempt...I've searched the archives but haven;t found definitive answers to my questions yet. I just 'inherited' a '99 Discovery Series I LSE with fact CD Changer and I'm hoping to upgrade the stereo. I was hoping to replace the head unit and add a self powered sub (8" Bazooka tube) in the rear cargo area. First, are there wiring harnesses available, like for other makes, that allow you to simply plug into the existing factory head unit connectors, or will I have to cut the connector off and wire individually? Second...I have head of problems with other makes when people have tried to wire in new high power head units (200 watt) with not getting clean power through because of the factory amps. If there are factory amps, what are they rated? Third, my Rover has a factory CD changer...is this also an Alpine unit? Do you know if there are adaptors that will allow my new head unit to control the changer even if the head unit is not Alpine? I know these adaptors exist for other brand factory changers like BMW and Mercedes but I hadn't run across one for the Alpine Rover changer. Maybe I should get an Alpine head unit...but even then it's not guaranteed it will work. I suppose I could ask Alpine.... But I really wanted a different brand. Lastly, how does everyone find the factory speakers to be? Does a good aftermarket head unit provide enough power to sufficiently drive all six channels or did you have to add an amp? Doe you get good clean sound out of them even at higher volume? Did anyone mess with crossovers or anything to minimize the bass into the door speakers, saving it for the sub? Sorry about the long list but none of the shops around here seem to have much Land Rover experience... Thanks, John
