With the vehicle stationary and the engine running and the clutch is out (engaged), the engine is turning the front half of the gearbox but the back of the gearbox is stationary. If you now depress the clutch, and the oil is hot and not very viscous, the gears at the front continue to turn for some time. If you try to engage one of the non synchronized gears (1, 2 or R), the spinning gears will crunch into the stationary ones and then stop and engage. If the oil is cold, the spinning gears stop more quickly. The solution is to depress the clutch and then touch the gear lever against 3rd or 4th gear to stop the gears moving with the synchro then with the clutch still depressed, engage 1st, 2nd or R. If you still get a crunch, your clutch is dragging and needs adjustment or worse. Of course, to change from first to second you have to double declutch and to change from 3rd to 2nd you have to double declutch but with a blip of the throttle with the clutch out and the lever in neutral to bring the front of the gearbox up to the speed of the back of the gearbox. If you need a more detailed explanation, just yell or email me. Michael
