Roman is correct: IF you can handle the weight of the gearbox, that is maybe the easy way...though that weight is really the problem.
I checked this out on several workshops some time ago, and all of them pulled the engine, not gearbox as LR Manual recommend!!!
Lifting engine out, is a very basic procedure, so should not give you too much trouble anyway. That is probably why Haynes recommend it: It is a simple procedure.
Make a list of things to do on the engine while it's out of the engine bay - maybe that will settle the argument...?
