Discovery TD5 - Good Vibrations!

Posted by Mark (NSW) on April 10, 2001 at 07:16:35:

As a recent purchaser of a 1999 Discovery TD5 I've been reading through the postings here and on the disco2owners group forum to learn what I can. Interesting stuff.

I've had the vehicle only a couple of months and have had a few minor problems but, having owned a Series III V8 some years ago, I'm a Landrover fan so minor problems don't upset me greatly.

When I got the vehicle (from a dealer in SE Qld) it had a bit of vibration which was felt through the accelerator pedal. It was torque related and I was told that it was an airconditioning pipe vibrating against the firewall or some such thing. The dealer claimed to have fixed this problem upon delivery and, sure enough, it did appear to be much improved when I picked it up.

However, 100km into the trip home to Sydney it re-appeared and was quite irritating: cruising at 100km/h I could lift my foot off the accelerator and, when I re-applied pressure on the pedal, I could feel/hear this vibration again. Fearing that I'd been duped, I phoned the dealer who directed me to another LR dealer in Brisbane. They quickly determined the problem to be an Exhaust Gas Modulator Valve (I think) which sits just in front of the brake servo but... they didn't have one! "Drive to Sydney and get one there, it won't do any harm" I was told.

So I did.

But it didn't cure the problem!

The symptoms are such that any load on the engine results in the vibration through the accelerator pedal (probably the brake too but I don't accelerate with my foot on the brake!) and a harsh, metallic sound from the engine.

Ring any bells? Got any suggestions?

Going off at a tangent.....

Does anyone know where I can get more detailed information about the mechanicals than is shown in the standard owner's manual? A recent contaminated fuel problem prompts me to learn how to empty the tank, clean the sender unit and replace the sedimenter! I don't want to be in the bush when that happens again!!

Otherwise I love the thing!

Mark
