If it is not as bad in reverse then i would suggest that it could be the teeth on the dog cluth in the transfer box being worn. Weak springs and sticking sliders on the shafts causing the clutch not to engage properly allowing the teeth to ride over each other, in turn causing more wear. the sticking shaft not allowing it to re engage. As most driving is generally done in forward gears more wear would have been caused to the front edge of the teeth during engagement, therefore more probs in forward than reverse.

You should be able to remove 4 wheel drive unit case without taking whole gearbox out, remove floor panels etc to get to it. I see to remember taking mine out blanking off the opening that is left and driving the vehicle as 2 wheel drive until I had sorted the dog geatr out.
