Rangerover springs

A friend of mine has just bought a 1986 5 door v8 rangerover. On each spring there are two clamps positioned opposite each other between the centre coils. At first glance they appeared to be clamps to stop the spring extending too far like those used for spring removal on some cars. However on further inspection it appears they are spacers too stop the spring compressing too much. Has anyone seen these before? Are they manufactured by someone? What might be their true purpose? Or has Mr Bodger been there, presumeably to stop spring compression under heavy load. Rod.
