I think Mike was trying to stress that you must not overfill the joint. If you do I guess it will build excess pressure and blow oil past all the seals -into hub, into axle and out of joint - probably wrecking the seals in the process.
If the level plug is kaput then drain the joint and fill with the amount of oil the manual indicates to be the capacity. (memory says 350ml., but check!) You wont be far out then.
