Low Speed Turning Shudder

Posted by Carolina on December 27, 2000 at 11:38:56:

I am the second owner of a 1995 Range Rover County LWB (100,000 miles on the odometer) and I average $3- 4,000 annually on maintenance expenses. I love the beast but my patience is wearing thin. Over the last month I have had the transmission oil cooler lines replaced, coolant and powering steering lines repaired (second time in 40,000 miles), exhaust manifold gasket replaced (third time in 40,000 miles) and the hubs repaired/replaced.

Current complaint? The vehicle shudders or vibrates at low speeds while turning into parking spots or in parking garages. The shudder stops a few seconds after the slow speed turn is completed. The tires occasionally "chirp" in the middle of the turn as if the brakes are being applied. The LR dealer suggested that my viscous coupling and possibly my transfer case would need to be replaced. Given the estimated cost ($1,500 for the viscous coupling) and previously poor experience with the dealer, I sought the opinion of nine other shops. Most would not even examine the beast due to their unfamiliarity with its systems. A transmission specialist said that there was no problem with the drivetrain. Could the problem reside in something other than the viscous coupling?
