This happened to my Disco alternator. The Magneti Marelli alternators as fitted ro Discoverys are not all that great. Mine lasted only 110,000 km. My autoelectrician suggested a Bosch replacement - slightly less out put. It was great and greatly improved my radio reception because the MM alternator had been so noisy. Can't comment on the security system implications of a disconnection. Perhaps you could just disconnect the connections to the alternator. Michael
