They take gear oil - use whatever weight and style you are using for the rest of the truck for your climate (i.e., 80-90 or 90 wt., synthetic if that's your preference). They each hold about 12 oz.; you fill until they overflow the level hole on the side of the joint. There should be three plugs on each joint: drain, level, and fill. If you have not been keeping up with them regularly, they are probably very dry on a truck as old as yours, assuming that your swivel ball seals are leaking as much as ours used to. Rover now has a grease which has replaced the oil, and is supposed to be nearly leak proof. You may want to try it. It comes in a tube the proper size for one swivel joint. Drain the oil first (but first make sure you can get the fill plug out, so you don't strand yourself with a dry joint). Then turn the steering hard against the stop in one direction to expose the cavity below the fill plug to receive the grease for that side. Then hard against the opposite stop for the other side.
