Sounds like my 95 Disco (also june mfg date). Had the same first two problems. Both are intermittent. Whinning/grinding noise occur mostly during hot summer months. Maybe due to water condensing and dripping to the compressor bearing causing it to rust.
Low engine RPM at start up occurs either below 50 F or above 95 F (ambient). RPM picks up to 750 with a whirling noise (whenever it wants to). See my Dec 19th msg. No joy with fixing both.
