jinxed...

Posted by ronin on December 26, 2000 at 04:24:20:

hi all,
i own a land rover disc. ,june 95 model 3.9 l EFI auto, and for last two years didn’t have any major problems, but in the last few months it developed several. i’m not sure if my mother in-law is pissed off with me and jinxed my car or discovery is starting to show it’s real character.
first – when engine is cold, vehicle not used for several hrs, after starting it develops whining/grinding medium to high frequency noise (something like rubber or belt friction noise) in engine compartment area and after approx. five min. it will disappear until next time. i’ve checked belt, adjusted tension but no joy.
Second – engine is warm, driven more than 20 min, on lights in neutral (or when engaged) with revs around 750 rpm engine would drop out, revs would go 200 rpm-s bellow for one brief instant and all will come back to normal several seconds later. however, when it starts it will continue to do the same until the end of the trip whenever vehicle is stationary.
and third- again engine is warm, driven for some time, if i’m reversing loud clang will occur when changing from drive to reverse. this problem is not present when engine is cold, presumably because transmission/diff. oil thickness is greater, then when it's being running for several minutes.

well that all folks, i hope that someone out there will be able to help me with a good advice.i have to go and talk to my mother in-law now.
thanks for reading this lengthy letter and merry Christmas to you all !!
