Swivel "Grease" up-date...

Posted by West Coast British/WCBR on June 17, 1998 at 22:00:36:

After much talk... Had the opportunity to get a Disco in that had been "up-dated". The new LRNA Swivel "Grease" really ins't grease, but a(poss) molly type heavy oil (oil is liquid/grease solid). Having rad lab test it.
Anyway, Rover Motor Co of NA began using 140w in swivels during the early 1960s, I est this up-date in 1990 while an Eng with LRNA... seems as though LR UK & LRNA forgot... again. Now they're trying the "grease". DO NOT USE GREASE in Swivels, even more so those fitted with CV joints (all V8 cars). Grease (in the true sense) will not lube needle bearings, bushings, upper swivel, etc. I still use 140w, poss exception being extreme winter conditions, then revert to 90w. If seal is kept clean, inside & out, swivel adj correctly, leakage is at best rare. To clean seal inside...
1) Jack-up & remove wheel
2) Undo swivel retainer & place on axle case
3) Carefully pry out seal, clean inner lip 100% & dry off
4) Refit seal & retainer
5) Refill swivel with 140w to level plug
6) refit wheel. repeat on other swivel
Have don this MANY times, can normally stop leakers without changing seal. Try it. MG
