Suggest you drain the Transfercase oil from the old 4-speed RR and see what's going on...... bronze shavings in the drain plug? These have a NASTY habit of eating the Intermediate Shaft Thrust Washers in the transfer, they'll also eat the needle bearings, the intermediate shaft, the indie bearing race of the 3 gears, etc. I devised a way to overahul this with the box in the car. go check it NOW! Oil IN NOT 90W, but 20/50 motor oil, suggest Castrol Syntec, as it is great on bronze bushes/washers.
Suggeste you go see Dave @ Southdown (if your in UK) and get some of his protectors, all 3 of them.
Don't sue BFG Trac-edge tyres, but Mud T/A as has better sidewall & tread.
Change ALL hoses, belts (keep old ones as spares), etc. Instead of me writing, fax me & I'll fax you a Parts List/Tool List. Fax 925-606-8302, West Coast Brtitish, Livermore, California. USA
